Bookmark Sorter
Folders first. Bookmarks in order.
Automatically organise Safari bookmarks alphabetically on your Mac, with a backup before every change.
A tidy bookmark collection
- Folders first, followed by bookmarks in natural alphabetical order: Item 2 before Item 10.
- Sorts subfolders while preserving bookmark names, addresses, Reading List and Safari’s special top-level order.
- Sort when Safari quits: quietly organise bookmarks after you finish browsing.
- Schedule: choose daily, weekdays, weekends or selected days and a local time. Safari quits normally, bookmarks are backed up and sorted, then Safari reopens if it was running.
- Sort Now: sort on demand, with a Quit Safari, Sort & Reopen option.
- A menu-bar app with one Running / Stopped control, no Dock icon, and startup when you sign in.
Download for macOS
Version 1.0.0 · Build 17
Requires macOS 13 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer). Full Disk Access is required to read and update Safari bookmarks.
Installation
- If the sorter is running, choose Quit from its menu-bar menu.
- Open the DMG and drag Bookmark Sorter to Applications. Choose Replace when updating.
- Open the app from Applications. In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, enable Bookmark Sorter when requested. Add it with the + button if needed.
- Open Schedule… from the bookmark menu-bar icon. Select Sort when Safari quits, scheduled sorting, or both, then save.
Your bookmarks, backups and preferences are retained when updating. The app checks bookmark access when opened. If macOS requests Quit & Reopen after granting access, allow it.
Scheduled sorting requires an awake Mac and the app running with sorting started. Missed schedules are skipped. Safari is never force-quit; if a save prompt prevents it from closing, that run is skipped. Safari’s own settings determine which tabs reopen.
Keep Bookmark Sorter up to date
Open the Bookmark Sorter menu-bar menu and choose Check for Updates…, or leave Check for Updates Automatically enabled to be notified when a new version is available. You choose when to install; an active sort finishes before the app restarts.
Automatic backups
A backup is created before each actual change. Already-sorted bookmarks do not create additional backups. Open the backup folder from About Bookmark Sorter → Open Backups.
To restore, quit Safari and the sorter, keep a copy of your current ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist, then replace it with the chosen backup renamed Bookmarks.plist.
Bookmark processing stays on your Mac. Safari must be quit while its bookmark file is updated. iCloud can subsequently merge changes from other devices and alter the ordering.
